What is Pi Kappa Phi?
Pi Kappa Phi is a nationally-affiliated Greek-letter social fraternity that was founded at the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina in 1904.
There are different kinds of fraternities, but almost all are based at colleges and universities.
An Honor Fraternity is exactly what it sounds like, a group of people, both male and female, usually, who were awarded membership as an award. Upon accepting membership, nothing is required of the members, however, usually, no events are held by that organization. The Order of Omega , Gamma Beta Phi , and Phi Kappa Phi are all honor fraternities with chapters at MTSU.
A Professional Fraternity, such as Alpha Eta Rho , is an organization dedicated to the advancement of the members’ chosen profession. Traditionally, men or women can join a professional fraternity.
A Social Fraternity, such as Pi Kappa Phi , is an organization of men or women (but not both) who are dedicated to social standards amongst its members.
Pi Kappa Phi, more specifically, has very specific requirements of its members called “CLASS:” Character, Leadership, Academics, Sportsmanship, and Service. What do these words mean when applied to a social fraternity?
Character: The initiated members of Pi Kappa Phi are bound by a set of standards including honesty and chivalry towards women.
Leadership: Pi Kappa Phi offers opportunities to its members like learning leadership skills that can’t be taught in a college class. We offer real-world experience running an organization that will not only look good on a résumé, but also help prepare you for other organizations where leadership skills are key.
Academics: You’re at MTSU to get an education, right? Partying all night and sleeping all day sounds good, but when you’re facing academic probation and loosing your scholarships, you’ll soon realize that there is A LOT more to college than partying hard. That’s why we have strict academic requirements concerning the grades of our brothers.
Sportsmanship: Pi Kappa Phi participates in all the intramural sports MTSU has to offer its students. After a game we always invite the opposing team in for a prayer, to celebrate a game well played. Most of our brothers have played a sport while being active in the fraternity, but sportsmanship doesn’t end on the playing field. We show team support for all of the teams at MTSU and want them to win!
Service: Ever heard of a fraternity that actually gives back to the community? If you’ve heard of Pi Kappa Phi, then you have. In 1979, a member of Pi Kappa Phi, Thomas Sayre, created Push America , an organization dedicated to the betterment of the lives of people with disabilities. Pi Kappa Phi has, since 1979, volunteered over 3.2 million man-hours and $26 million in labor costs for Push America . Additionally, the brothers of Delta Iota work very closely with the MTSU Office of Disabled Student Services .
